Motorists on Bellary road in Bangalore, particularly vehicles coming towards the city from Bengaluru International Airport, are forced to pay toll, though the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to upgradate the highway completely. The highway is also being maintained poorly by NHAI. With this, now motorists feel that NHAI has a fit case on its hand for abolishing toll collection on Bellary Road.
NHAI had proposed to upgrade the highway to provide signal-free access to the Bangalore airport. The proposal included converting the existing six-lane highway into an 18-lane expressway, including a six-lane elevated section and three-lane service roads on either side. Neither the service lane nor the elevated expressway is ready.
Despite the hue and cry raised by road users, the toll collection began last year. It caused heartburn among all categories of airport-bound road users.
