Mumbai's LBS Road flyover may be opened by month end

Mumbai's commuters forced to use the old Mumbai-Agra highway to cross the crowded LBS junction at Kurla may finally get some relief by the month-end.

The Mumbai Metropoltian Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be throwing open a 527-metre long flyover at the junction by the end of July. The flyover has been in the making for nearly seven years. Six lanes wide, it starts a little beyond Netaji Nagar on SG Barve Road, bypasses the busy LBS Road junction and lands on CST road.

The LBS Road junction has for long been subject to traffic jams as vehicles trying to reach the eastern suburbs are obstructed by Kurla-bound vehicles coming from CST road. Vehicles headed to and from CST road can now bypass the LBS road junction by taking the new flyover.

MMRDA project director Dilip Kawathkar said that the flyover will be thrown open to the public by the end of this month.

The flyover is part of the much-delayed Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) and has been under construction for close to seven years.

The SCLR, which will provide much-needed connectivity from the western suburbs to the eastern parts of the city, is likely to take another year to be completed, according to MMRDA officials.
