Kyong Students' Union has appealed the Nagaland government to finalise the modalities for exploration of oil and gas from the proven Changpang oil fields within a month. The union asked the cabinet sub-committee on petroleum and natural gas to finalise the modalties within a month for crude extraction from Changpang oil fields of Wokha district.
After exploratrion and production for some years, ONGC abandoned the oil fields in 1994 after a serious law and order problem there. The government constituted a cabinet sub-committee with Planning Minister TR Zeliang as convener to prepare modalities taking into consideration the interests of all stake holders for resumption of oil production in the area and other potential places in Nagaland.
In a letter addressed to Zeliang, the students' body said that the panel after holding consultations with the land owners, tribal bodies and students on January 8 last year had assured to come up with the draft modalties within 3 months.
But till date nothing has emerged and the oil spills from the abandoned rigs have threatened agricultural lands, flora and fauna in the area, the letter said.
