Power cuts bother Lucknow, patients suffer a lot

Lucknow is reeling under erratic power supply. Especially, the most sufferers are patients at different government hospitals in the city. It is said that on May 27 patients undergoing treatment and their attendants are also having tough times due to prolonged power cuts at different government hospitals in the city. As many as 10 surgeries were reportedly postponed in different hospitals due to long power cuts.

Veerangana Jhalkari Bai Women's Hospital was the worst affected. It witnessed a 14-hour long power cut. Supply was snapped at around 5 am in the morning due to a fault in the transformer and restored around 7.30 pm. As a result, pumps meant to fill the overhead tanks could not function, triggering potable water scarcity in the hospital.

Patients and their attendants in the hospital woke up to dried up taps. Forget water needed for daily needs, there was no even drinking water at all for the patients. Then, the lift elevators were not working as they are not linked to the usual power back up.

Therefore, many patients were transported to the wards with great difficulty. Three planned surgeries were also deferred. Patients at Balrampur and Veerangana Avanti Bai ( Dufferin Hospital) had a similar experience. Doctors at Balrampur hospital informed that power supply snapped around noon and was restored at 6.30 pm. As a result, five surgeries were rescheduled.

Besides this, patients and attendants in the out-patient department were forced to brave the scorching sun and summer winds. Another two surgeries were postponed at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civil Hospital in the hour-long power cut. Though most of the hospitals have generator sets, they were used to attend to emergency surgeries.
