Officials of Andhra Pradesh government laid a temporary bridge on a water body in 30 hours in Srikakulam district to enable students and others to cross the lake following the directions of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Following media reports that schoolchildren in Chapara village of Meliaputti mandal in Andhra Pradesh bordering Odisha were forced to cross the lake precariously by balancing on wooden planks, the Commission in October 2011 directed the Srikakulam district collector to submit his report.
According to the report of Srikakulam collector G. Venkata Ram Reddy, the executive engineer of Tribal Welfare Department, Seethampet, set up a temporary bridge in 30 hours by October 24, 2011, to provide safe passage to students.
